Gordon Mifsud, a popular tournament and cash game player at local card rooms was one of the 2 remaining Maltese players at the Malta Poker Dream main event. In a frustrating turn of events, though, he found himself card dead for the duration of the second day. Nonetheless, Gordon managed to maintain his stack, and experienced hardly any volatility thanks his masterful use of steals at the numerous tables he sat on. We caught up with Gordon, and ever-supporting Tess, as he exited the field with 77 players remaining, just 14 seats away from an in the money placing.
GM: “I’ve been card dead all day. Stealing every now and again. The last steal was with Q7 spades when I pushed 50k and stole 22k which was about 50% of my stack. We were running around from table to table because people were dropping out very quickly. Even more so, since at one point there was a problem with the lighting which brought about an additional table change after just two rounds on one of the tables I sat on.”
“On my last table I was sitting with Salvatore Bonaavena, the EPT winner and Eros Nastasi another big name in the Italian Poker world – so it was a pretty tough table to say the least. I still really enjoyed having them at my table though. Bonavena is a good player and a gentleman. At one point, when he raised my BB he showed me his cards, showing he wasn’t stealing because I was short stacked. He showed me QQ and I respect that. He’s a very charismatic guy, he chats around, he’s a cheerful bloke”
MPE: So, what happened in your last hand?
“UTG + 1 raised and I pushed with 70k holding AsTc. Everyone folded and UTG calls with JJ, flop showed 34686…so he dominated me. He had over 400k …. I busted in 78th position…..
It was a very good tourney, I liked the structure, loved it actually….will do it again anytime, competition was good…Italians have improved a lot. The level of play in the tourney was very high…..there were pros, at every corner, on every table….the standard of Italian players is much higher than it was, even when compared to 6 month ago…“
