George Galea places 18th at the 408 player Malta Poker Dream

At the start of day 2, with an average stack of 73K at the Malta Poker Dream main event many of the local poker fan’s eyes were fixed on Martin Kjaer and Keith Boniface who held 152k and 140k respectively. George Galea was still far off at that point of the tournament holding 47,200 which was just about half the average stack.  As blind levels started to increase throughout day two though, the remaining local players starting dropping out, either from being card dead, or the occasional bad beats that naturally hit players during long tourneys.

As Day 2 went along, Galea showed his true strengths at the felt though.  He was the only Maltese player who made it through the end of day 2.  He started the day with 47k, went up to 95, then 140k, 220k (with 114 players left) and then dropped slightly to 176k as the second tournament day came to an end with 72 players left in the field.

He started day 3 with a bang, quickly taking his 176k stack to 310k, which was the average stack at the time.  This gave him a well-needed gasp of breath, offering him more options on how to play his opponents at the felt.  He kept increasing his stack, made it in the money, and eventually finished the day with a very pleasant 617K as the player count dropped to just 35 players.

Galea started day 4 as the 11th strongest player on the field of remaining 35 players from the starting count of 408.  The average stack was up to 582k by then.  Galea had 617k chips so he was hovering above average although not comfortably enough to play loosely and take wild chances at doubling up. He maintained his stack for a large part of the game and took down a very tasty pot giving him a leg up to around 1.1million chips.  This was the highest that Galea had reached, and as players started to drop out, due to squeeze as a result from the ever-increasing blinds, Galea adapted his play accordingly.

With just 18 players left in the game, the 3 remaining tables are being broken down to the 2.  George Galea, who has been having an incredible tournament so far, is holding less than average stack, at around 680k.  The average is currently 1,1m and players just went on a short break before continuing at the new seating arrangement at the new blinds level at 25k/50k

We took the break as a perfect opportunity for a group photo with George and all his supporters here at the Malta Poker Dream tournament venue – the superb Grandmaster hall at the Portomaso Complex!

35 players remain at the main event of the Malta Poker Dream day 4.  The tournament  which will continue at the 24th level later on today at 3pm.  The average stack is up to 582k and our Maltese ‘Poker Knight’, George Galea is going strong holding 617k.  He’s currently in 12th place as far as chip count is concerned, and the only remaining Maltese player at the main event.  Supported by his family and friends, both at the tournament venue as well as on the PokerMalta site and MaltaPokerEvents facebook page, George has gone through the first 3 days of the tournament with some mild swings managing to beat the majority of his opponents and holding onto his stack with very calculated decisions and well timed actions when they counted the most.

Well at this stage, some people might argue that poker is all about luck, with a very small element of skill involved.  If this were to be the case, it surely doesn’t apply for George Galea.  Just to give you some background on George – apart from his numerous wins already, he also won the Malta Poker Showdown anniversary tournament at the Casino di Venezia earlier on this week, showing that skill and perseverance give great results at the felt.  Apart from his own success this week-end, George seems to have spilt over success at the felt to his partner and frequent money finisher Graziella Vella, who also won €800 for placing 3rd at the Malta Poker Dream ladies tournament.  Graziella achieved her placing whilst she was over-seeing George’s progress at the main event.

We’ll have our fingers crossed today as we sit through with George at the Portomaso Casino.  The tournament kicks off at 3pm! Players, poker fans, and anyone who wants to follow George at the live tables is welcome to  join the action.  There’s only 35 players left, and Galea stands a very good chance of making it through the final stages, bringing the Malta Poker Dream trophy home this year

Graziella-Vella 3rd place at the Ladies event

Graziella Vella took the 3rd prize at the Malta Poker Dream ladies event.  The €160 freeze-out tourney attracted 37 players for a pool of around €5,500.  Many of the local Poker ladies took part in the event, including Iva Pavlova, Anna Colley, Sofia Edbom, Sharona Refalo, as well as some newcomers like Maureen Sultana.

Whilst waiting for her partner George Galea, as he progressed through the toughening levels of the main event, Graziella won €800 for her placing, after an 8 hour journey to the final table.  Starting at 6pm, with 10,000 starting chips, the levels progressed every 20 minutes, till they reached 4k/8k when Graziella entered her final hand.
